Community Based Environmental Conservation (COBEC)

COBEC is an environmental organization that is protecting the wildlife and the flora of Kenya's coastal region. COBEC involves a huge community and education in their efforts to pass on knowledge and awareness. However, COBEC does not just provide information but combines it with direct action. That is decisive to ensure sustainability. People that are participating in the projects remain motivated and see the positive aspects of environmental conservation. Furthermore, it is more likely to achieve their goals and to work out long-term solutions because the force of a big community can exert pressure on governmental agencies. The government can coordinate its decisions based on the inhabitants' requirements. COBEC is registered with the Kenyan Ministry of social services since 2009.

COBEC's projects include mangrove planting actions for habitat restoration, beach clean-ups and sea turtle conservation. Well thought-out strategies and management are reqired to convince the local people of the importance of COBEC's goals and to encourage fishermen to co-operate with COBEC. COBEC itself is a non-governmental organization and depends on donations as well as on help by volunteers from all over the world. You can sponsor a tree with only 5 euros (6.50 USD).
