Jomo Kenyatta Public Beach

The DLIST team re-visited the stakeholders at Jomo Kenyatta Public Beach in August 2011 to report on the findings from the previous work, to get feedback on the draft vision, to discuss the overall DLIST progress and to get input on the proposed interventions. The team gave a presentation of the findings in the MBOA office on JKPB. Other stakeholders such as institutions and authorities were also visited to get a briefing on the progress.

During this visit, it was made clear that the ownership of JKPB has been transferred to the National Museums of Kenya which is under the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. This clarification of the land title deeds on the public beach is an important development and it is seen as very positive by all stakeholders.

Being the August holiday season, the beach was crowded with both foreign and local tourists from up country and around the world thus turning the beach and its surroundings into a beehive of activities. It would be very clear to visitors coming to this area that this is indeed a public beach. Business is booming with marvellous live-shows entertainments and clean-up activities were also taking place. It is amazing to see that such a small space can occupy such a variety of activities.

At the beach front, the JKPB stakeholders had planted small coconut palms to prevent cars from parking on the beach site. This is also a great step forward towards the prevention of beach erosion and shows people’s awareness of environmental issues.
While in Kenya, you can’t afford to miss a visit to Jomo Kenyatta Public Beach (JKPB) – the only public beach in Kenya!

Hi Dishon and the rest of the DLIST community

I will be happy if you could share the source of this definition of the beach. It can be useful.
