The Council of Ministers approved the creation of the Aquaculture Marine Reserve, to develop marine aquaculture and increase fish production in the country.
According to the spokesman for the Council of Ministers, Alberto Nkutumula, the country has a potential for annual production of one million two hundred thousand tons of shrimp and more than seven hundred and ninety thousand tons of fish in a territorial space that comprises about 120 000 hectares in 39 coastal districts of the country.
Nkutumula stated that the fish production in aquaculture reduces the pressure on marine species as well as lower levels of incidence of poverty and nutrition among the fishermen in the family sector.
The areas potentially conducive to the development of marine aquaculture extend along the coastal districts of Cabo Delgado, Nampula, Zambezia, Sofala, Inhambane, Gaza and Maputo.
