Contact in Zanzibar (Marine Protected Areas)
Please Help
The UNDP/GEF/GoM Project "Partnerships in Marine Protected Areas in Mauritius and Rodrigues" would like to do an international exchange visit to Zanzibar and see how they are managing their Marine Protected Areas.
I would be most grateful if I can get responsible contacts in Zanzibar to facilitate such exchange.

Re: DLIST ASCLME: Contact in Zanzibar (Marine Protected Areas)
Dear Allen
Good to hear that there is a mission intending to pay a visit in Zanzibar MPAs
The best person as suggested would have been directly to the Conservation areas but personally I am giving you the Deputy Princial secretary's email adress (responsible for this Minisry of Fisheries and Livestock oomakando@yahoo.com) His name is Dr Omar Amir who is also an expert on marine mammals in the region.
The MPAs being in his ministry, it will be very easy for him to cordinate and authorise the visit
All the best
regards
Dr. Narriman

RE: DLIST ASCLME: Contact in Zanzibar (Marine Protected Areas)
Dear Allen,
This is a wonderful initiative. If people from different areas of the Western Indian Ocean could visit other MPAs or Marine Conservation Areas and learn from other people's experience on how management works, I think all MPAs in the region would work better. Please find below contacts to the Department of Fisheries here in Zanzibar. I hope you will be able to get in contact with the head of the Marine Conservation Unit there and arrange an exchange visit.
wwfmenai@zitec.org or mcsznz@zanlink.com
Good luck!

RE: DLIST ASCLME: Contact in Zanzibar (Marine Protected Areas)
The Marine Conservation Area (MCA) system in Zanzibar is well worth visiting. The MCA system is increasingly viewed as one where new ground is broken in terms of government and community partnerships, and in terms of putting marine conservation in place and a country where pressures on the resources are immense and where old style models of excluding people from sizeable marine and areas will no longer work. Instead, MCAs are viewed as multiple use areas under management, where the users benefit and rely on the resources, and where no touch (core areas) can be put in place strategically. When all stakeholders agree during the establishment of the MCA process, then management is much easier. I am sure many lessons can be exchanged with Rodrigues, which is a poor area of the Republic of Mauritius, and where the reliance on marine resources is so high. But the MCA approach can also work in multi-use marine and coastal areas such as Le Morne, where the lagoon is actually part of a World Heritage Site. Frida already supplied contact details below.
