Bazaruto Island

I went to Ministry of Fisheries in Mozambique this August. During our conversation they mainly focused on many points, but emphasised a recent problem that is occurring around Bazaruto Island with the artisanal fishers. It was said that the fishers complain that the area where they used to fish has been converted into a conservation area. Now they have not been allocated another area with similar conditions where they can fish and now they are suffering. They sometimes go and catch fish in the conservation area at night because they live close to the sea and do not have any other alternative livelihoods but they get caught. The Ministry of Fisheries is now working with the fishermen so they can fish a little closer to the Island. In fact the this proposal has been accepted but there is still a long way to go for it to be implemented. The fishers have said if there are given equipment to fish they would fish in areas further from the Island but only a few fishers have boats in good condition. The local material they have to build boats does not help much therefore they need boats from elsewhere. My question is therefore, do you think this strategy of giving fisher boats will help both local fishers and the conservation of the marine resources around Bazaruto Island? If so, are there any success stories that the DLIST community can share?

Re: DLIST ASCLME: Bazaruto Island

Hie Julieta This email caught my eye as I am currently working in Mozambique on a Sasol project. That is very interesting about the fishermen's situation at the island. I think giving the fishermen new boats will definitely help both them and the conservation purposes. I wonder if the Ministry can finance this though depending on the number of boats needed but I say it has to be done for the sake of conservation (so that tourists have fish to see when they come to the island!) and the fishermen will benefit too. Re : DLIST ASCLME: Bazaruto Island

Dear Vimbai,
Thank you for your interest about the fishermen's situation. In fact, I am a
tourism operator in Maroantsetra in Madagascar and I am working with the nature conservation bodies to assure the
protection of whales and other fish in the marine park. That is why I say I need boats both for me, the fishermen and for tourists trasportation. I hope you might be able to help. Because we lack boats, and I can't afford them myself. The boats here are
expensive. Could you finance boats for this area, for the benefit of the coservation and tourism development as well? So, my question is if you think it would be possible for you (via your project) to send us or buy
boats for us here, to make this plan come true?
