first fieldwork

Dear colleague and subscribed members, The first fieldwork on coral drilling as part of te MASMA project is coming up. Between August 7th and 26th a team of researchers from the NIOZ (2), Shoals Rodrigues (2) and the Mauritius Oceanography Institute (MOI; 1) will conduct coral drilling on the reefs surrounding Mauritius. We will also collect fossil coral samples from storm deposits that contain 2000-7000 year old corals. Our colleagues from Shoals and MOI will receive training in coral drilling and continue drilling over the next month in order to build a collection of coral cores to study the effect of sediment erosion and sea surface temperature extremes on coral reefs in the Mascarenes. On the 19th of August a seminar day is planned where various researchers will introduce their projects to a wider audience in Mauritius. On the 25th of August a second seminar more specific to coral paleoclimatology will be held at the MOI. The seminars are part of the trainig and outreach compenent of the MASMA project. Similar seminars are planned in Madagascar, Kenya and Tanzania later this year (October-November 2010). Best regards, Jens

Mauritius fieldwork and modelling

Dear colleagues, The planned fieldwork in Mauritius in August 2010 had to be postponed due to ilness of the PI. However, a new date is now available. The fieldwork will take place between September 29th and October 15th. Researchers from SHOALS Rodrigues, Mauritius Oceanography Institute, Albion Fisheries Research Center and Royal Netherlands Institure for Sea Research (NIOZ) will drill coral cores from the western and eastern coast. A training seminar will be given during that period, all interested researchers from Mauritius are invited to attend. You can send an email announcing interest to jens.zinke@nioz.nl. The hydrological modelling part of the MASMA project has now kicked off. Joseph Maina (Kenya) is currently visiting the VU University in Amsterdam. He will receive training in the use of the hydrological model STREAM that will enable us to obtain data for the past 100 years on river discharge impacting coral reefs in the western Indian Ocean. Researchers at the Institure of Environmental Studies (IVM) at the VU Amsterdam (Hans de Moel and Prof. Jan Vermaat) support the actvities of the MASMA project. Researchers interested in the modelling part can contact Joseph by email (mainajm@gmail.com). kind regards, Jens

Re: DLIST ASCLME: first fieldwork

Dear Jens

Hope you ae well. Just wanted to update you - we managed to get a short coral core from 2 mile reef at Sodwana - just over 1metre - we had some difficulty with the drill getting stuck etc. Hopefully we will be able to get better samples next time.

I would still like to get this analyzed at your labs if that is possible and collaborate with you on this?

As we had discussed - spectral luminescence, stable isotopes, Sr/Ca. and coralXDS.

I would like to make payment for these analyses soonest and then send the samples over. Would it be possible for you to arrange an invoice from your end that I can make payment. The NRF is not going to let me carry my research money over to next year and I need to spend it!

At least if I can get an invoice from you and get the credit with the lab then the analyses can still go ahead.

Can I split the coral sending you half?

Please let me know if all this will be possible

All the best
Ron
