Community feedback on the draft development plan for Jomo Kenyatta Public Beach
The DLIST team went back to the community on the Public Beach in Mombasa in August 2011 to present the findings, the draft vision and the proposed interventions to the community and key stakeholders. A meeting was arranged with the community groups on Jomo Kenyatta Public Beach to give feedback from the planning process, to present the results from the interviews and the stakeholder group meetings and to present the draft vision for the community.
The community members agreed with the findings and results and came with feedback on the draft vision and suggestions for added interventions or modifications to the ones proposed in the draft plan. The first step that is proposed with highest priority is the need for the development of a management plan for the public beach. This must be developed in a participatory manner including all stakeholders on the beach and other key players such as Kenya Wildlife Services, the National Museums under the Ministry of National Heritage and Culture, the Mombasa and Coast Tourist Association, hoteliers and NGOs.
The main problems such as lack of effective waste management, pollution, lack of business licence enforcement, lack of infrastructure development (toilets, parking, changing rooms etc) should all be regulated under this management plan and any new development on the public beach area should follow the plan.
The next steps are that the DLIST team will finalise the Development Plan for Jomo Kenyatta Public Beach, translate the summary and vision to Kiswahili and start distributing the document to the stakeholders on the beach and other key stakeholders. The DLIST team will also try to support the call for a meeting to initiate the development of a management plan for the public beach area.
